Team USA Qualification for the UCI BMX World Championship 2017
Guest post by Miguel Colon Burgos
I qualified to represent Team USA for the UCI BMX World Championship!!! The World Championship event will be in the Novant Health BMX in Rock Hill, SC from July 25-30, 2017. I will be racing the 14 Boys Challenge Class. The qualification race was on Friday, March 31, 2017 and I had 41 riders in my class. We were all racing hard in order to make the team. We had to do 3 qualification rounds, then quarter and semifinals rounds. The top 4 riders in the semifinal round will make the main event and be part of Team USA. I placed 2nd out of 41 riders, not bad at all!!! My goal for the race was to race hard and smart, trying to stay out of trouble and make the team. Every race was intense but, I felt great and had the speed that I needed plus the home track advantage.
The day before the qualification race was a very especial day for me. I had the privilege to be next to Mike King (BMX and MTB World Champion, Hall of Famer), Australian National BMX Team (also Olympians) and 2016 Olympic Silver medalist from Team USA Alise Post. A total of 800 – 8th grade middle school students from the Rock Hill Schools, including my own class from Sullivan Middle School plus teachers, Directors and City Management personnel came to the Novant Health BMX track for a school trip to learn about the sport that we love. We answered their questions and I did a little demonstration for them. I think it was a great opportunity to show them the sport and hopefully have them back in the track so they can ride and have fun like we do.
Also, the energy that they gave me to race was amazing. I wanted to do great for them, my sponsors, my coach and my parents. I couldn’t be able to do what I do without the support of them. Thanks for believing in me and hopefully I make you all proud.
Looking forward to see you all in July cheering for me and Team USA!!
